Theo Verelst Diary Page

Tue 3 july 2001, 15: PM

I've decided after good example to write some diary pages with toughts and events.

Oh, in case anybody fails to understand, I'd like to remind them that these pages are copyrighted, and that everything found here may not be redistributed in any other way then over this direct link without my prior consent. That includes family, christianity, and other cheats. The simple reason is that it may well be that some people have been ill informed because they've spread illegal 'copies' of my materials even with modifications. Apart from my moral judgement, that is illegal, and will be treated as such by me. Make as many references to these pages as you like, make hardcopies, but only of the whole page, including the html-references, and without changing a iota or tittel...

And if not? I won't hesitate to use legal means to correct wrong that may be done otherwise. And I am serious. I usually am. I'm not sure I could get 'attempt to grave emotional assault' out of it, but infrigement on copyright rules is serious enough. And Jesus called upon us to respect the authorities of state, so christians would of course never do such a thing. Lying, imagine that.

I'm thinking, basically. I've been doing some jazz playing yesterday, which I like.

Thinking about and sort of observing what I can thus far make of lie around me, and the what I consider valid enough possibilities to concern myself with, is not particularly nice, though I guess there's enough out there more than fun enough. Lots are more like described in a Davis song which I heard recently, bitches brew, which is not unlikeis mentioned in various biblical sources, so I guess that is nothing new.

What about christian life? Major babylon happens there in general, I'm certain. I've just seen a bit of a swaggart service of a little while ago, where at least in very clear words babylon and the modern churches are mentioned, clearly not meaning those are disjunct sets of people and organisations.

Want a fortune cookie ?

San Francisco restaurant, that's my first association with the idea, I think because I saw some movie or tv piece or series with the idea, a meal, a cookie, some stupid line in a little note in it (sort of chinese habit), and a fun enough chat or conversation subject.

Fortune is also a unix program, its also on linux I seem to remember, which takes short proverbial type of usually humorous statements at random from a big database of them, sort of like fortune cookies. When under uniz a new shell is started, like opening another dos window, the first few lines of it can automatically be filled with such a fortune. I don't have the program at this moment, but I checked the web, and at least found a html embedded one which makes a new browser page every time with another fortune:

Your Fortune

In case of injury notify your superior immediately.  He'll kiss it and
make it better.

Your Fortune

This fortune cookie program out of order.  For those in desperate need,
please use the program "_______randchar".  This program generates random
characters, and, given enough time, will undoubtedly come up with
something profound.  It will, however, take it no time at all to be
more profound than THIS program has ever been.

I found a fortune on the web for use as well, one from a text data file called 'offensive' (may be excluded from the use by randomizing program by using fortune -offensive when sensitive persons are around):
A person who has both feet planted firmly
in the air can be safely called a liberal.
Below, I had to edit in a real player image impression, which like those fun enough product box pictures, suggests a lot better picture on a little tv than there usually is, because realplayer screen content seems to be absent in screen dumps.

The major shell window runs 'vim' which I aliased to 'vi' to make me feel right at home in the industrial age of computing, except for the colors for which real programmers will have appropriate comments ready after a quick glance.

In the string simulation department, more tweaking of the parameters in the existing program for multiple strings, made me a 3 string simulation with indefinate sustain, a minor chord with interesting enough attack going into fed back sound. Mainly I've made the feedback over all strings more limited (by an arctangent), and a bit more amplifying around zero, also I've added a nonlinear factor to the end points of the strings a bit more, and I've changed the point where the feedback (as in a virtual amplifier feeding the guitar back) is linked into the simulated string to achieve resonance. I found out with previous sounds that using the monsterrack is fun to make studio sounds with, but the effects cannot be used in the feedback loop, which would be a major addition, just like interactive playing, this sound just sounds, there is no timing, playing with other instruments, no note bending, no guitar pedal effects to tweak, except that the basic sound starts to get strong enough to take as a real (new kind of simulated) sound source. Three few hundred order oscilating elements, non linearities, and a clear physical analogon, with the sound to make clear at least term simulation is not out of place.

Some dutch

Almost in the beginning of my diary pages, I've though about doing a grammatical analysis of a sentence a page, which I didn't deliver because of various reasons, amount which that at some point I didn't have (much) access. I had the idea because I thought it made sense to have some awareness of grammar and its meaning in normal and literary and especially biblical language. As it had turned out, I've been more into idiom and comparisons and word meanings in the greek, because they seemed to be more relevant to get an idea of the meaning of the language.

Recently I've applied the same principle to the dutch language, mainly because I don't like much about the countries ways, and suddenly became aware of various expressions and words which indicate the reasons I seem to find present in life, too. I don't remember all the expressions but can still come up with a few:

   in de luch laten hangen
met lede ogen,  ledematen,  stoffelijk overschot,  lidmaatschap
   deelnemen,  mededeelzaamheid,  onze deelname,  mededeling

The meaning of love

When I had a reasonably patched up record player, a know Dual type, which I fitted with an improvised counterweight instead of the spring balance (when I got it it was broken) and adjusted in antiskating sense by controlled tilting around an axis parallel to the average arm position, I didn't buy many records, because I had casette tapes mainly, and later recorded from CD, but I do remember the ones I did quite well.

A few of them are rose royce's 'fresh cut', several kraftwerk albums, and 'a broken frame' by Depeche Mode. The latter had a hit song 'see you' which had good enough harmonic lines and synth sounds, in short I liked it, and though it was not exactly average to hit parade material, naybe because it had a certain simplicity in ways, maybe for contentwise reasons. Having looked up the album it came from and having bought it, the good enough element I had the chance of putting in the dual, together with my own low noise quality enough riaa preamp box made synth pop sounds fill my at the time little room repeatedly, and I knew the songs by heart in a short time, and made those roland drum machine patterns and synth lines move air more than enough.

The sort of material defineately made clear to me what electronic and digital instruments were up to, so I had a frame of reference at least when I did my own sounds, later on also on similar equipment. I quite well that cheap synths can suck and that certain things can work quite well and certain equipment, given time and a way to make it come together into a song and production that has some meaning. This album does not have much of the quality audio recording and producing level of lets say a classic queen album, but it has some of the same liveness and strength Kraftwerk got out of their own computer systems ages ago that made them popular with me. Their short 'plick' sound, which is quite recogniseable, is still in use today, I've even found it in preset drum sounds of sounds modules.

Those kraftwerk songs without question are popular and avant garde techno classics, which were made with equipment they've made themselves. Some songs without question too long for my taste, though when one listens to a well amplified playback, that is not noticed. Real songs, they are, with a sort of popsong point, for instance autobahn, the most musical one being 'pocket calculator' I think, its the hit song, again, that got me interested in them.

I've gotten midi's from 'a broken frame' depeche mode songs, kraftwerk, and a more contemporary example, 'deeper underground' and the theme from the movie 'godzilla', which has a soring enough analog lead/bass sound which is a good example of what I've been planning and building equipment for since some time. The latter does come out good enough from the midi player I mentioned to be heared, so let me see if I can make some not to big mpeg of it.
